Motoring

North Devon and Exmoor tend to be the quieter side of the counties of Devon and Somerset. Exmoor is the second least visited National Park, yet it is stunning when you spend just a little effort exploring it. The scenery ranges from the majestic to the soft, but always magnificently beautiful whatever the season.

The byeways can be remarkably quiet, even in high season. The woodland and moorland is breathtaking. You could see birds of prey, Exmoor ponies, foxes, stags, goats – sometimes all on one day. We even discovered what looked like a Saxon church, it wasn't but was beautiful in its simplicity. Seldom will you go out without seeing something of rare interest.

Turning up a very steep hill on a narrow lane with morning sun streaming through the broad leaf trees we stopped to admire the view. A stag leaped out in front of the car, stared at us, then totally unconcerned, continued on his way, followed by his hinds. And that was just the start of a normal day.

Do come, it's lovely.
